One of nature’s beauties is spring time in the desert, especially if there has been a significant amount of rain like there has been in California this past winter. Southern California has received enough rain that the wildflower blooms will be at their peak by mid-March of this year.
Two types of flowers that will be in abundance this month in California’s Mohave desert due to the abundant rains are purple Sand Verbenas and white Dune Evening Primroses. The Sand Verbenas are creeping plants that can have flower stalks up to 10 inches long. The Primrose plant can grow up to 18 inches high and 40 inches white. The flowers open in the early evening and close in mid-morning. After abundant rains, both types of plants will blanket the desert making it look like a sea of purple and white; truly a joy to the senses.
Artist James Lee, a native of South Korea who has been living in the southwestern United States since 1981 has beautifully recreated this scene entitled Springtime Valley. While not everyone has the opportunity to travel to the deserts of southern California, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Nevada, Utah, Texas and northern Mexico to see these lovely spring flowers, you can still look at them as you and your loved ones assemble this puzzle.
