This puzzle, entitled “This is My Body”, actually shows 18 bodies in various poses. There are 11 Jewish men seated on cushions in what was the normal way to dine at a table 2,000 years ago in Palestine. The five women are serving them their Passover meal, which is a Jewish feast celebrated annually every spring. One man is standing behind his friends listening to Jesus speak. And then, ominously, the last man [Judas Iscariot] is depicted leaving the festivities to go betray his friend.
But why “This is My Body” for a title? The 26th chapter of the biblical book of Matthew explains why the artist, James Seward gave it this name. It says “While they were eating, Jesus took a loaf of bread, and after blessing it he broke it, gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” This puzzle depicts the possible scenario in which Jesus told his disciples about the reasons for his upcoming crucifixion and resurrection. And it shows the person responsible for this leaving to set things in motion….
