This simple scene shows Jesus Christ praying for strength the hour before his arrest and crucifixion. The 26th chapter of the book of Matthew in the Bible says that Jesus had brought Peter and two others with him to help him pray, but they fell asleep on him instead. This is why the painting shows the light from above brightly shining on Jesus while the others are in the shadows.
Gethsemane was a garden at the foot of the Mount of Olives which was located across the Kidron Valley from Jerusalem, where Jesus would be crucified less than 24 hours later. It was a familiar place to Jesus and his disciples. In the distance, we can see the domed Temple depicted. About 50 days later, this Garden and the Mount of Olives would be a place of joy instead of sorrow when people saw Jesus ascend up to Heaven.
