Poppies for Remembrance of Fallen Soldiers

Poppy Paradise by Jen VranesAccording to artist Jennifer Vranes’s website, she loves this scene because it represents a little bit of heaven, hence the reason for her entitling the painting “Poppy Paradise”.

Poppies have become¬†a well known flower, not just for their beauty, but also for being a the “Remembrance” flower that is used to commemorate dead soldiers in World War I and later. During WWI with trench war on the Western Front in such places as Flanders, Belgium, the red poppies bloomed in abundance. The poppy was¬†mentioned in the poem “In Flanders Fields” written by Canadian physician Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae in May 1915. Currently, in countries of the British Commonwealth of Nations, the poppy as the symbol of the fallen soldiers is displayed on “Remembrance Day” on 11 November each year. In the United States, they are displayed for the same purpose but on Memorial Day at the end of May.
