While Memorial Day honors those who have perished in armed conflicts, and Veterans’ Day honors those who have served in the military, Armed Forces Day honors those who are presently serving in the five military branches – Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard. It falls on the third Saturday in May, which is at the end of Armed Forces Week.
Of the five branches, the oldest three [Army, Navy and Marines] were created in 1775, thus making them older than the nation itself. The Coast Guard was created in 1790 and then the Air Force came into being in 1947. According to Wikipedia, Armed Forces Day was created in 1949 and first celebrated 20 May 1950. Previously, each branch was celebrated on its individual day. It is celebrated with parades, receptions and air shows.
